Where I stand
Elected leaders must demonstrate that their campaign finance filings and values match. At this time of national reckoning with racial injustice, our elected leaders have been called upon to reflect upon contributions they’ve received from political action committees that represent law enforcement.
The day after the 2017 primary I received a $1,000 campaign contribution from the Rochester Police Locust Club. I received this contribution in spite of my strident support of a Police Accountability Board. At the time, I was conflicted by their endorsement, but decided to accept it, pay the money forward, and double down efforts to pass a PAB, which we did. It’s what was best for the future of our city then and the need for it is even more apparent today.
I understand, however, that those actions are not enough on their own. Therefore, I commit to match what I accepted from the Locust Club with a contribution to the Avenue Blackbox Theatre in support of Black Lives Matter. Furthermore, I will not accept, nor do I have reason to suspect I would be offered, the Locust Club’s endorsement in the future.
Given the gravity of the national crises before us, it feels inadequate but necessary to say, I pledge to continue to support politically active Rochesterians as an ally, contributor, accomplice, and advocate as we all strive to build a healthier, more equitable, inclusive, and just Rochester.
