Community Engagement – Fall Newsletter
Dear Friends,
In this season of gratitude, I am thankful for everyone who works to make our community stronger and healthier. Over the course of the last year, I have been able to show my gratitude by using a small amount of discretionary funding to provide direct support to six amazing community organizations. These organizations work across numerous sectors to improve quality of life.
R Community Bikes distributes 2000 refurbished bicycles every year to adults and children. They also do repairs and conduct workshops. They are using an allocation from my office to provide adult tricycles for City residents with limited mobility or special needs.
Westside Farmers Market builds community, supports local business, and improves the health of the southwest neighborhoods. Westside Farmers Market runs a “Walk & Talk with a Doc” program that lets customers interact with healthcare professionals. I’m proud to support this initiative and their growing SNAP program.
Flower City Panthers offers a comprehensive youth development program. They attract kids with sports, but ultimately use the program as a way to build academic skills and conduct community service. Their allocation will help them build additional sport programs, including baseball and lacrosse.
Flower City Arts Center holds classes for adults and children in a wide variety of arts, from ceramics to printmaking to photography. This center provides community access to big, expensive infrastructure like dark rooms, kilns, and printing presses. My allocation to the center will help support the 678 photography program at Wilson Academy.
WOC Art Collaborative is a multi-generational collective of 11 black women and women of color creators. They have committed to bringing the power of their individual accomplishments, visions, and social justice practices to create a new collective rooted in intersectional equity for women, femme, gender-variant, and nonbinary artists of color. They will use their allocation in support of its DreamLab- launched to provide office and studio co-workspace as well as a venue to collaborate for up to 30 WOC creatives.
Rochester Youth Hispanic Baseball League serves around 60 youth, predominantly in the northeast of Rochester. I worked with the Rochester Red Wings and several generous sponsors to bring the entire league, coaches, and volunteers to a game in August. It was the first time at Frontier Field for many of the players, and I hope it only reinforces their love for the game and the ROC.
I am also grateful for your support and interest in the work that I continue to do to create a healthy Rochester. Thank you for caring about local government that is transparent, informed, and compassionate. You are one of the many who help to make Rochester the very special place that it is. Thank you.
